H-E-B FORSAKES CHRISTIAN VALUES, PROMOTES HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA

If you're like me, when you think about H-E-B Supermarkets, you think of good prices, fresh food and traditional values. Think again - at least in terms of their values.
On Saturday, June 17th, much to the disappointment of loyal customers throughout South Texas, H-E-B chose to sponsor the San Antonio Homosexual PrideFest at Hemisfair Park from 3-11 p.m. For the second year in a row, just like they've done in Austin for the last two years as well.
Look at some pictures http://www.qsanantonio.com
It was first brought to my attention by 27-year-old KSLR listener David New, a newlywed who's expecting his first child and attends Grace Tabernacle Church. David encouraged me to challenge my radio audience to boldly share their Christian faith at the homosexual event itself. More on that later.

At David's suggestion, I looked at a homosexual website -- http://www.pridesanantoniotexas.org - which prominently listed H-E-B as a proud sponsor along with Wells Fargo Bank, ID Lubricants, The Gay and Lesbian Yellow Pages, Halo Beers, Miller Lite and Shout Magazine.
After I alerted KSLR listeners that same day -- Tuesday, June 13th -- by e-mail and on the air, "Adam's Army" sprang into action.
Hundreds of Christians took the time to politely express their dismay and bewilderment by e-mail and phone, upset that a company like H-E-B, with deep roots in Christianity, would so willingly abandon their principles for the sake of political correctness.
Hendle Rumbaut from Austin wrote, "I was surprised and sickened to hear that H-E-B is one of the sponsors of the San Antonio homosexual PrideFest. I had always thought you were a family-oriented institution that understood the difference between right and wrong. Apparently I was wrong to assume that. There is nothing good to celebrate about the homosexual life. It is full of sickness, early death, sin, deception, abomination, promiscuity, and especially judgment from God. You will have to answer to God for sponsoring this event promoting such immorality. Please come to your senses and stop alienating the majority of consumers who have strong Christian values."
Ken Ebel couldn't believe it.
"As a loyal customer of H-E-B since I was a kid, I am very disappointed to see H-E-B supporting this type of event. I have always looked up to H-E-B as a company that had strong family values, and a company that set a good example for the state of Texas. If your support of these kinds of activities continues, we will have to consider taking our grocery business elsewhere, probably to Wal-Mart. We spend $700-$1,000 per month with H-E-B on groceries as well as medicine."
Paul and Nancy Weimeschkirch wrote that, "We will no longer shop at H.E.B. until you stop your sponsorship of homosexual activities. As a Christian, we feel that our continued spending of our money at your store violates our conscience. We believe that if we continue to shop at H-E-B, we are participating in this sponsorship."
And Gene and LaVada Triesch of Blanco stated emphatically, "We have been loyal H-E-B customers for decades. We feel that encouraging values contrary to Biblical teaching is detrimental to the community, as well as detrimental to those persons who are trapped in immoral behavior. It has been our impression that H-E-B always promoted Christian values. If this is not the case, then we will choose to shop elsewhere."
Despite the fact that I left messages for Dya Campos and Pablo Rodriguez, the two local H-E-B media contacts, I never received the courtesy of a reply from either one.
However, those of us who sent H-E-B an e-mail of complaint, did receive an official e-mail in response from their customer relations department. It read like Adam's vain attempt to divert attention from his own sinful choices in the Garden of Eden as he points at Eve.
"We received your e-mail regarding our participation and the participation of other corporations and banks in the upcoming Gay Pride Festival. H-E-B received a request for a small donation for the event; the request was reviewed and approved by our Regional Diversity Council. We realize that you are unhappy with us about this but we hope you will take into consideration that we contribute to over 5,000 non-profit groups of all kinds across the state of Texas annually."
- Rationalization #1: Since H-E-B wasn't the exclusive sponsor of the San Antonio homosexual PrideFest, then everything is just peachy-keen. After all, how bad can it be if other companies signed off on the dotted line and wrote a check as well?
- Rationalization #2: Since H-E-B's donation was "small" comparatively speaking, that somehow minimized the damage and everything is just hunky-dory.
- Rationalization #3: Since H-E-B gave money to 5,000 different groups, somehow that trumps the fact that they used the profits from our grocery shopping to fund and promote the homosexual agenda.
Can you imagine if they used that same twisted logic in the unlikely case of H-E-B sending money to al-Qaeda, our enemy in the War on Terror?
"Well, other companies have funded al-Qaeda," they would say.
"It was a small donation. We didn't pay for a lot of weapons of mass destruction," they would assert.
And "We gave money to 5,000 other groups as well as the terrorists," they would snivel.
All of a sudden, using that unambiguous analogy, it becomes crystal clear, doesn't it?
Right is right. Wrong is wrong. A bad decision should never be minimized or explained away.
In my mind, H-E-B should have done three things immediately.
- Asked for the money back.
- Held a press conference apologizing for their past contributions, posting the apology on their web site.
- Commit to never promote the homosexual lifestyle again in the future.
But they dug in their heels.
Austin York filed a story for 1200 WOAI Radio on June 16th entitled, "H-E-B Not Bowing to Pressure: The grocery giant will sponsor gay event."
He reported that, "H-E-B is standing firm with its commitment to sponsor a Gay Pride event held at Hemisfair Park this Saturday. The giant food store chain had received letters from angry citizens urging them to stop promoting the homosexual lifestyle. The upset San Antonians even plan to picket one H-E-B store at 281 and 1604."
And picket we did.
100 KSLR listeners joined me that Friday night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. along the Highway 281 access road as we took a stand for God's righteous standard. Leviticus 18:22 says quite plainly: "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable."
I personally instructed the group to allow our signs to do the talking, no matter what some passing motorists might say or do in an attempt to get our goat. While many San Antonions honked approvingly, giving us the thumbs up, others used different sign language and verbal epithets which left little to the imagination.
We kept firmly in the forefront of our minds the teaching from I Peter 3:15 which says "Always be prepared to give an answer for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil."
How true that is.
To their credit, KABB Fox-29, KENS-TV 5, Telemundo-TV 60 and The San Antonio Express-News all chose to cover the story.
Tracy Hamilton, the Express-News reporter, was visibly upset with me. Her lips were quivering, her hands were shaking and she was raising her voice repeatedly demonstrating plenty of hostility.
I purposely lowered my voice, looked her right in the eyes and said, "I've been interviewed by the Express-News many times. I never expect the reporter to agree with me, but I've never been treated so unprofessionally before. What's really going on here? This seems pretty personal."
Tracy revealed to me that she knew someone who had embraced the homosexual lifestyle.
I countered, "Well, I'm glad your paper sent an unbiased reporter out here to cover the story!"
She insisted that she would strive to present the story objectively despite her passionate and angry opposition to my Biblical worldview.
Read her story here >>
Perhaps most revealing in the Express-News story was one line, revealing that H-E-B was unapologetic about their support of the homosexual agenda. Winell Herron, a spokeswoman with H-E-B, said the company would not be asking for its $300 back.
Between H-E-B's initial e-mail to concerned Christians, the WOAI Radio report and the Express-News piece, it was patently clear that H-E-B was not only unapologetic, but indeed proud of their support and promotion of homosexual behavior.
Not surprisingly, the spokesperson tried to mix apples and oranges: "Our corporate policy has always been one of inclusiveness. We want to treat all our customers and (employees) with dignity and respect."
Every one of the hundreds of KSLR listeners who wrote or called would agree that H-E-B should treat every customer and every employee, regardless of their sexual preference, with dignity and respect. Of course. That's understood. But, in no way, does that translate to agreement with and financial support of having unnatural, immoral, unbiblical sex with one's own gender.
Rosa Nuckels, a KSLR listener, made a profound comment in writing to the paper following the Saturday, June 17th story. "'Inclusiveness' and 'dignity and respect' for homosexuals does not mandate our celebration of their lifestyle."
Look at a homosexual website's pictures and article about the picket in front of H-E-B:
They also filed this story >>
The liberal weekly San Antonio Current was none too pleased that Christians took a gracious stand, preferring to call us bigots and falsely comparing the choice of homosexual behavior with skin color and gender.
Take a look >>
A statewide homosexual group called Equality Texas blitzed the state with an e-mail blast and claims to have generated 2,800 pro-H-E-B emails from its homosexual constituents.
Take a look at their action alert which references me and KSLR:
Within days of my initial discussion of H-E-B's sponsorship of the homosexual PrideFest, their logo mysteriously disappeared from the http://www.pridesanantoniotexas.org website. And then by Friday, the H-E-B logo had also vanished from their sister site http://www.AlamoPrideFest.org while Miller Lite and Wells Fargo remained.
I captured the initial webpage image. (see above right)
So here's the $64,000 question. Did H-E-B drop their sponsorship? Absolutely not.
A KSLR listener sent an e-mail to the organizers of the San Antonio homosexual PrideFest and wrote, "I noticed that H-E-B's logo is no longer on your website. Did they cancel their sponsorship with your organization? Or did you just remove their logo from your website even though they are still sponsoring you?"
Darren responded in a June 16th email in which he stated that H-E-B is "still a supporter, but they did ask that the logo be removed. Most of the sponsors have been hit hard with requests in the last few days to remove themselves from the PrideFest participation."
In other words, despite the fact that H-E-B proudly gave the $300 donation to promote the homosexual agenda, they did not want their conservative, Christian consumers taking a look at the homosexual website and seeing their logo there alongside Wells Fargo Bank and Miller Lite Beer. Apparently, H-E-B is proud enough to fund the homosexual agenda, but they don't want to hurt their profits from gullible Christians.
Note the list at which still lists H-E-B as a sponsor as of June 22nd in the second to last paragraph.
Want more proof?
H-E-B had a parade float in the Austin Homosexual Parade this year on Saturday, June 3rd, 2006. There, in the midst of The Cockpit Club, Bound by Desire, The Texas Gay Rodeo Association, The Transgender Advocates of Central Texas, and The Central Texas Boys of Leather, is good ole H-E-B Grocery Stores with a planned float #56, complete with employees dressed in the characteristic H-E-B red shirts: http://austinprideparade.sitestreet.org/7/Participate.htm.
Or you can look at the picture of the Austin Homosexual Parade from 2005 showing H-E-B's participation there as well. It's the fourth row, second picture from the left: http://austinprideparade.sitestreet.org/photos2005.asp
On some level, H-E-B's decision to promote homosexuality is in keeping with their "diversity" statement. They indicate that choosing to have homosexual sex is somehow comparable to immutable, unchangeable characteristics like one's gender, national origin, and color of skin. http://www.heb.com/aboutHEB/careers-diversity.jsp
But it certainly is out of line with the Christian roots that date back to the early 1900's in the Butt family which founded what has become the H-E-B chain of 304 grocery stores in Texas and northern Mexico.
According to H-E-B's various websites, "Charles and Florence Butt moved their three sons in 1905 from Memphis, Tennessee to Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country. With an initial investment of only $60, Florence opened the C.C. Butt Grocery Store on November 26. The youngest son, Howard E., became intrigued with the grocery business. He took over the family business in 1919, upon his return from World War I. In 1924, he expanded the Butt Grocery Company with a new store in Junction, about 60 miles from Kerrville. Howard's motto was, 'He profits most who serves best.'
"They were blessed with three children, Howard, Jr., Eleanor, and Charles. The family prospered as the children were reared within a heritage of Christian values implemented in the grocery business. Charles, the youngest son of Howard E. Butt, (never married) and became president of the H.E. Butt Grocery Company in 1971. Today, Charles Butt is chairman and CEO of H-E-B, having grown the business from sales of $250 million in 1971 to $11 billion in 2003."
This decision, under Charles Butt's leadership, to push and pay for the homosexual agenda is a sharp contrast to his brother Howard's decision to honor God in all he says and does.
Take a look at a picture of Charles Butt, President of H-E-B, worth $2.2 billion, the 116th richest man in America. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2005/54/W4TW.html and http://www.fotps.org/images/reception0824/FoTPSReception042.jpg
Take a look at a picture and biography of Howard Butt, Jr., his brother, who is Vice Chairman of H-E-B and President of the H. E. Butt Foundation : http://www.HEButtfdn.org/AboutFoundation/Biography.asp#Ephesians
"Howard and his wife Barbara have three grown children and seven grandchildren and live in San Antonio. Their two sons are vice presidents in the grocery company, and their daughter and son-in-law are deeply committed to their work in the Foundation."
According to the Butt Foundation website, "Howard, Jr. dedicated his life to both the grocery company and a ministry for Christian lay renewal. In 1961, Laity Lodge Retreat Center was built as a tool to encourage him in this ministry, and it now welcomes 2,500 guests per year. Across denominational lines, churches, families, and individuals by the thousands have been revitalized to minister to others. In 1966, Laity Lodge Youth Camp was born and has grown to serve over 1,300 campers each summer."
"Laity Renewal Foundation, created in 1995, supports the ministries of:
- "'Laity Lodge' - an ecumenical Christian retreat center dedicated to our common quest to know Christ and what that means in the ordinary secular relationships of our lives. It is a place where people are free to explore choices leading to growth in creativity.
- "'Laity Lodge Youth Camp' - a coed, interdenominational Christian youth camp which focuses on spontaneity, fun, and relationships to show kids the "best two weeks of their lives," while sharing with them the Gospel message and love of Jesus Christ. LLYC is dedicated to providing campers with healthy fun in an emotionally safe, learning environment.
- "'Foundation Free Camps' - provide free camping facilities for qualified church and community-service groups. The program especially targets children and youth groups in Texas communities who would not otherwise be able to afford such an experience. The goal is to provide a place conducive to healthy Christian character development."
Their "continuing vision and mission is to equip believers in Jesus Christ to practice servant leadership by the Holy Trinity to renew individuals, families, institutions, and society - that God may be glorified and the nations come to faith."
Now that's quite a mission's statement!
Plus, Howard has written a number of Christian books: The Velvet Covered Brick: Christian Leadership in an Age of Rebellion (1973), At the Edge of Hope: Christian Laity in Paradox; Renewing America's Soul: A Spiritual Psychology for Home, Work, and Nation (1996); Renewing the Spirit, Healing the Soul: A Christian Exposition for Twenty-First Century Living (2000); and Who Can You Trust?: Overcoming Betrayal and Fear (2004).
In light of this impressive Christian legacy exemplified in Howard Jr., I'm convinced that he would be the most open family member to hearing reasoned, Scriptural arguments for an H-E-B policy change: No more promotion of the homosexual agenda. You can contact Howard through the Laity Lodge in my action steps below.
Scripture is clear.
Romans 1:21-27 says,
"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
"Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised. Amen.
"Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."
Unlike the homosexual activists, we need to be Christ-like, respectful and factual when we dialogue with the officials listed below in my action steps.
Pat from Corpus Christi wrote me and said, "I cannot understand why you (and many other people) have to be so stupidly hypocritical towards us."
Hypocritical? Last time I checked that word described the moment when someone professed the importance of certain virtues that he himself does not have.
Let me be clear. I am saying that the virtuous thing, no matter the temptation, is to resist participating in any sexual behavior that God has not sanctioned. I am not hypocritical in that regard. I am waiting until I marry my fiancé before I have sex.
No hypocrisy there.
Andrew from Austin writes: "I've just learned that you and your listeners are picketing H-E-B in San Antonio for its support of the SA Pride Festival. While I beg to differ, I understand why reasonable Christians might object to gay men and women having sex as immoral. But our existence, our presence, our contributions to society as a whole, and our right to rejoice in who God made us to be is not going to be
denied any longer. Having us feel unwelcome where we shop for food -- how does that serve a Christian purpose?"
Well Andrew, I do not believe that H-E-B has to donate some of their profits to support a homosexual PrideFest event in order for homosexuals to feel welcome in their grocery stores. That's a specious argument.
More importantly, God did not create anyone for the unnatural purpose of having sex with one's own gender. Genesis 2:24 notes, "A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
It would violate His clearly revealed will in the Scriptures which describe such sexual behavior as an abomination.
Joshua from San Antonio wrote me and said: "Get over it! The marriage amendment failed."
While the U.S. Senate has not yet seen fit to affirm the fundamental definition of marriage as the union between one man and one woman, every time the American people themselves get a chance to vote on the question at the state level, they resoundingly embrace God's marital blueprint by at least 75%. That's not exactly a couple of screwballs on the far right now, is it?
Joshua went on to say, "What's the big deal anyway? Jesus was a homosexual. Think about it. He ventured off on his 'excursions' with 12 other men. Now that's one h*** of a gay orgy. So if Jesus was gay, then why do you all care about H-E-B donating a measly donation to a fundraiser?"
Needless to say, that is both outlandish and sacrilegious. Even the most liberal theologians on the far left in America have never claimed that Jesus and his disciples participated in homosexual orgies. That kind of argument is hardly deserving of a response at all to be honest.
Plus, as I told the Express-News, "It is not the amount, but the principle. Christians are protesting, he said, that H-E-B would give any amount of money "to a group of people defined by their sin."
Brace yourself. Get ready for a real double-standard.
On the one hand, Joshua claims that "All your kind does is spread your ideologies of discrimination and hate."
Ironically, Joshua goes on to advocate hate himself by wishing both for my early death as well as threatening me with physical violence: "The good news is that we all die, some of us hopefully sooner than later. Have a good day. P.S. By the way, you all might want to be careful tonight while you're at H-E-B. Something might go horribly wrong!!!!!"
When I re-read that e-mail, I was reminded of the Scriptural counsel found in Matthew 5:11-12: "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."
Let me address this allegation that it is hateful to challenge homosexuals to repent of their sin.
If I have an alcoholic in my family, who continues to ignore reason and common sense as he drinks himself ever closer to an early grave, the loving thing is to challenge him to lay off the liquor, allow his kidney to heal and make healthier choices for his future.
Similarly, in a post-AIDS world, the most loving thing to do when a family member, especially a man, chooses to have homosexual sex, is to encourage him to embrace chastity regarding his same-sex temptations.
Chad from Houston writes, "I find it completely appalling that you are staging a protest again H-E-B. I don't understand how you can claim to be a 'Christian' and think that discrimination in any way, shape or form is wrong."
Sadly, Chad incorrectly concludes that simply because I object to H-E-B's decision to use their profits to promote the homosexual agenda, that I am somehow convinced that homosexuals should not be welcomed as customers or employees. That's patently false.
Homosexuals, like adulterers or the heterosexually promiscuous, deserve to be treated with courtesy at H-E-B, despite their sinful choices.
But the prize for the most loving e-mail goes to Josh #2 from San Antonio who wrote: "It's people like you that make this country sick. All of you evangelicals misinterpret the Bible horrifically. You're banner reads 'Talk Radio with Guts!' Here's some guts for you. F*** YOU, YOUR GOD AND YOUR LISTENERS!!!"
Ah yes. Welcome to Josh's world of tolerance. It's a wonder to behold, isn't it?
When David New, the young man who first alerted me to the San Antonio homosexual PrideFest, went to the event with three other Christian colleagues to pass out tracts and to share his faith in Christ, he was met with hostility, intolerance and discrimination.
One of the coordinators came over and said that they did not want us there," recalled David. "We want you to leave!" she demanded.
Take a look at the Christian tract which he distributed from an ex-gay ministry based in Connecticut
David told her, "We have the right to be here because it's a public place."
She proceeded to walk away and talk with the police. About four policemen discussed it amongst themselves and concluded that, for some inexplicable reason, the Christians were not allowed to be on public property.
David politely asked the policemen a question. "Why do we have to stand outside of the park since it's public?"
At that point, one policeman "told us that the homosexuals had rented out the entire park from the city of San Antonio."
"I asked him again was it in the law that we must move. And the policeman said, "Yes, I'm sure," looking at David as if he better 'Do it or else.' "So we complied."
David paused to reflect: "I wasn't really surprised that the homosexuals asked me to leave because ultimately they're intolerant of Christians and God's truth. But I was surprised that the police demanded that we leave since it's public property, even though they had rented it out."
David New and Troy Mummy, 30, shared their faith in Christ with a homosexual male couple. Oddly enough, both men had been married with children and in the ministry. They chose to walk away from their wives and kids, get a divorce and participate in homosexual behavior with each other.
David explained to them, "Just because you have a temptation or a proclivity toward sinful behavior doesn't mean that you have to yield to those desires."
After their conversation, the homosexual men seemed very convicted of their sin. They seemed almost repentant," remembers David.
Elena Guajardo, the open lesbian from District 7 on the San Antonio City Council, appeared at the Homosexual PrideFest at Hemisfair Park to read Mayor Phil Hardberger's proclamation that June 17th was "PrideFest Day."
Hmmm. Do you think Mayor Hardberger represented his constituents well by endorsing a homosexual event with the City of San Antonio's official stamp of approval?
Frankly, I think it's odd that a mayor of any city would knowingly endorse sexual behavior that, especially among men, is likely to lead to the transmission of HIV, leading to premature death! I wonder what the San Antonio Health Advisory Board would think?
Now that the San Antonio Homosexual PrideFest has come and gone it's time for the upcoming San Antonio Homosexual Pride Parade on Sunday, July 2nd at 9 p.m. at 1010 North Main Street, traveling north along Main to Dewey Street. Learn more here >>
Liberal Democratic Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte has agreed to be the Grand Marshall.
David New, the listener who shared the love of Christ with the homosexuals at the PrideFest event, has one message for the church of South Texas: "I think that Christians need to stand up and expose the deeds of darkness. We need to be salt and light in the earth and make our voice heard."
He's right. That's what Ephesians 5:11 and Matthew 5:13 command us to do.
As Edmund Burke once said, "The only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing."
